I don’t consume media hoping to be depressed and I’m not the type that thinks making things dark gives it more depth, but it’s the fact the Ojamajo Doremi can be depressing, that things can get sad and that hard work is required to overcome problems that makes it so uplifting. But it’s stuff like this I think that lets me take this show so seriously, that keeps it sticking in my mind. I know I’m making OD sound way way more crazy and dark than it is with this talk, so I have to clarify the reason why I love this show so much is that it will always make me happy no matter what. There are plenty of other, much more extreme cases of me literally being unable to believe where the show went (this being an honestly pretty tame example), such as when Doremi’s mom talks about contemplating suicide or the non-chan episode, but I think this is where that began.

It wasn’t as if I wasn’t enjoying the show prior to this point, it was incredibly cute and comfy and fun, and a lot of the episodic plots were really really excellent, but this little montage really started to let me into how real this show could be (not to mention this is part of an episode that dives into the subject of divorce). Here I was, 23 episodes into a very cartoony show about magic that could do literally anything, and I was seeing something so brutal I couldn’t believe it. This scene from the witch exam where the Ojamajo’s worked until their hands bleed and they were left completely exhausted really left a big impact on me.
